In a statement, the PSP said that 7,303 crimes of theft in homes were recorded and that there was “a gradual decrease over the last few years” in this type of crime.

The number of home thefts has been decreasing over the last five years: 8,000 crimes were recorded in 2020, 7,943 in 2021, 8,091 in 2022, 7,490 in 2023 and 7,303 last year.

“Criminal groups that carry out this type of crime, although they do not change much the methods of entry into homes, in addition to studying the daily routines of residents, always exploit, over time, the vulnerabilities that exist in the security of properties,” explained the PSP in a statement.

Regarding prevention, the PSP issues several warnings: always lock your front door when you leave, make sure the building door and garage door are closed, keep clothes hanging out or leave a night light on to indicate that someone is home, do not share your routines on social media, do not have large amounts of money or jewellery at home, and write down information about suspicious people or cars.

The PSP also warns that complaints should be filed as quickly as possible, whether as a victim or a witness.
