According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), these figures exceed the 2018-2020 figure (81.22 years) for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The increase was 4.3 months for men and 3.5 months for women.

Life expectancy at birth was therefore calculated at 78.73 years for men and 83.96 years for women.

“In the space of a decade, there was an increase of 1.17 years in life expectancy at birth for the total population, being 1.49 years for men and 0.84 years for women”, highlighted the INE.

According to the same source, the increase was mainly the result of the reduction in mortality at ages 60 and over.

“The contribution of older ages was more significant for women than for men”, according to the analysis presented.

Life expectancy at age 65, in the period 2022-2024, was estimated at 20.02 years for the total population.

At age 65, men could expect to live 18.30 years and women 21.35 years, which corresponds to an increase of 0.30 years for men and 0.24 years for women compared to 2021-2023.

In the last ten years, life expectancy at age 65 has increased by 11.5 months for men and 8.5 months for women.
