The percentage of these health professionals with one or more jobs (or multiple jobs) is 52.6%, while it is lower for nurses (24.3%). In the case of doctors, only 47.4% work exclusively for one SNS provider, according to the study “Healthcare professionals’ satisfaction in Portugal and retention in the SNS”.
The survey of doctors and nurses, coordinated by Tiago Correia and developed by the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, revealed that the reasons for this accumulation of functions are not the same for everyone, and financial need is just one of the explanations for this phenomenon.
“The more satisfied professionals are, the greater their desire to stay where they work. And working exclusively for a single SNS provider is one of the factors indicated as a potential driver of this happiness,” says the summary of the morning paper.
In addition, management positions are important, both among doctors in state hospitals and those in private units. In other words, being a manager in a given health facility is a factor that influences the desire to stay there.
As for salaries, the Planapp report shows that, in the case of SNS specialist doctors, the amounts are divided almost equally: 43.6% earn between €2,000 and €2,999 and 42.8% have a monthly net income of €3,000 or more.
You cannot live on 2000-3000€ per month. These are ridiculously low wages for a medical professional.
