On 16 May 2016, João Sousa reached 28th in the singles rankings, the highest-ever ranking for a Portuguese player. Francisco Cabral surpassed this ranking, climbing three spots after reaching the Winston-Salem final.
Alongside Austrian Lucas Miedler, who maintained his 28th spot, the Porto Alegre native lost the final of the North American tournament on Saturday, August 23, to Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Rafael Matos, Cabral's former partner. This was the Portuguese-Austrian duo's second final this season, after winning in Gstaad, Sweden, and it took place before the start of the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
In singles, Nuno Borges moved up one spot and is now 41st in the world, the same as Jaime Faria (117th) and Henrique Rocha (167th), in a ranking that remains led by Italian Jannik Sinner, followed by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and German Alexander Zverev.
In the women's rankings, there was also no change at the top of the table, with Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka leading, ahead of Poland's Iga Swiatek and American Coco Gauff.
Matilde Jorge once again became the top Portuguese player, rising to 213th, after surpassing her sister Francisca Jorge, who rose to 219th.
