During these four days, all roads lead to Sagres for Portugal’s largest event dedicated to nature and birdlife – the Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival – which once again celebrates the spectacular autumn migration. Hundreds of seabirds glide over the waves, eagles and storks dance in the sky, and small migratory birds stop to rest on cliffs, trees, and bushes before continuing their journey to Africa.

Now in its 16th edition, the Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival returns for four days packed with unique experiences. Get ready for birdwatching excursions on land and at sea, walks along hidden trails, inspiring talks, and activities designed for all ages. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover that the Algarve is much more than beaches — it’s also a vibrant haven of biodiversity.

This year’s headliner is the blue rock thrush (Monticola solitarius): elegant, elusive, and known for its unmistakable song. Sagres is the best place in the Algarve to spot this bird, which lives among cliffs and rocky landscapes, where the blueish-grey shimmer of the male stands out against the scenery.

The preliminary programme and registration will be available starting September 2 at 9am at www.birdwatchingsagres.com. In the meantime, mark your calendar and book your accommodation in the region – this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Organised by the Vila do Bispo Municipal Council, in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), the Festival promises an unforgettable celebration of nature for everyone.
