Due to the rough seas, the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga have been under a yellow warning since 6:00 a.m. today and until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.
In a statement on Monday, the IPMA explained that waves of up to four metres in height are expected on the west coast on Tuesday, and that they could reach a maximum height of up to seven meters, an unusual occurrence in August and a result of the positioning of post-tropical cyclone ERIN.
Following the worsening sea conditions, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) and the National Maritime Authority (AMN) warned the public, advising preventive measures.
The AMN urged beachgoers to exercise caution when going to the beach, to visit beaches with permanent lifeguards, to respect flags and beach signs, and to follow the instructions of lifeguards and other lifeguards, to keep a close eye on children, and to avoid standing under cliffs.
