In a statement, the authority explained that the initiative, which began on Monday, aims to make it easier for residents to dispose of dangerous waste at suitable collection points. These materials are often wrongly deposited in general waste containers, posing risks to both the environment and public health.
The project covers several areas of urban waste management, including the collection of unsorted household rubbish, the maintenance and cleaning of bins, the selective collection of bulky items and green waste, as well as construction and demolition debris. It will operate across all 18 parishes and parish unions within the municipality.
The first mobile units are currently stationed in the parishes of Vale de Santarém and Pernes, where they will remain until 31 August. From 1 to 14 September, the service will move on to Moçarria and Abitureiras.
These mobile recycling points are equipped to collect hazardous items such as paints, varnishes, spray cans, fluorescent lamps, batteries, ink cartridges, and small electrical appliances. By offering a convenient and safe way to dispose of these items, the initiative seeks to reduce improper disposal and promote more sustainable practices.
The municipality emphasised that the project is designed to encourage “active participation from citizens in the separation of hazardous waste produced in households,” reinforcing the broader goal of advancing a circular economy. By promoting greater responsibility in waste management, the pilot scheme not only supports environmental protection but also serves as an educational tool, raising awareness among residents about the importance of correct disposal methods.
