Speaking to reporters at the accident site in Lisbon, the Carris president stated that the Glória Elevator's maintenance has been provided by an external company, Main, for 14 years, and that an investigation is underway to determine whether the issue was due to maintenance.
"The maintenance protocol was scrupulously followed," Brito Bogas stated, emphasising that the last general maintenance of the Glória Elevator was performed in 2022, occurring every four years. However, the plan also provides for weekly and monthly maintenance and daily inspections, which have been carried out.
The same official said that interim maintenance is still carried out every two years, in this case in 2024.
The public transport company's plan also covers the Lavra and Bica elevators.
"Carris values safety very highly. We have had very strict protocols and excellent professionals for many years. Therefore, we have to understand what happened, and we will understand," said Pedro de Brito Bogas, also emphasising that it is "a very sad day."
The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed this Wednesday at 6:04 pm on Calçada da Glória.
The Glória elevator is operated by Carris and connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto, on a route of approximately 265 meters, and is very popular with tourists.
