According to Museums and Monuments of Portugal (MMP), the public company that has managed 38 national cultural facilities since January 2024, registered visits fell from 5,157,404 in 2023 to 5,065,228 in 2024 (-1.8%), a "slight decline".
"In a year marked by the total or partial closure of several museums and monuments for renovation work, most of which were under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), visitor numbers showed a stabilizing trend," official figures indicate, revealing 92,132 fewer visitors compared to 2023.
According to 2024 statistics, paid visitors represented 66% of the total, with foreign tourists accounting for 55% of the total, according to the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports.
Among the most visited cultural facilities in 2024, four monuments stand out: the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, which once again leads with 946,014 visitors, followed by the Sagres Fortress, with 443,691 visitors, the Belém Tower, with 387,379 visitors, and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança in Guimarães, which had 376,331 visitors.
Among the monuments listed as World Heritage Sites—in addition to the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower—are the Batalha Monastery, with 354,905 visitors, the Convent of Christ in Tomar, with 349,401, and the Mafra National Palace, which welcomed 216,097 visitors in 2024.
Regarding museums, the National Tile Museum in Lisbon stands out, which welcomed 297,203 visitors last year, and the National Coach Museum/Royal Riding Arena in Lisbon, with 219,506 visitors.
