The meeting with Carlos Moedas was requested by the ANBP before the incident in the Glória lift last Wednesday in Lisbon, but the fatal accident ended up dominating the agenda, with firefighters placing the emphasis on prevention.

Firefighters should have “direct contact” with “everything that revolves” around cities, in order to carry out drills, together with technicians and companies that supervise the facilities.

“With these exercises, drills, visits and work with the fire brigade, the likelihood of a situation of this nature occurring will be much lower,” because firefighters, technicians and companies "are obliged to produce a report, which will be studied and analysed,” said Fernando Curto, president of the ANBP.

“It should be mandatory for this to happen,” he stressed, reporting that Carlos Moedas “agreed, thought it was legitimate” to adopt this procedure in the future.

“The safety of the city of Lisbon and the country must be the first obligation of those in government,” said the firefighter.

The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, did not make any statements at the end of the meeting.

The accident that occurred last Wednesday with the Glória lift caused 16 deaths and several serious injuries.
