The campaign, promoted by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP), includes awareness-raising and enforcement activities, with a particular focus on roads and access points with heavy traffic.
In a statement, the ANSR reminds that, in the event of a collision, a vehicle stops in a fraction of a second, but occupants, if not wearing seat belts, continue to travel in the direction of travel, at the same speed as the vehicle was traveling.
In a head-on collision at 50 kilometres per hour, a 70-kilo driver without a seatbelt suffers an impact equivalent to a free fall from a third story.
Using an approved helmet, properly fastened and adjusted, reduces the risk of death in an accident by 40%, he adds.
The ANSR also states that the correct use of an approved child seat, adapted to the child's weight, reduces the risk of serious injuries by 60%. For example, for children up to four years old, the use of a rear-facing child seat, combined with the use of a seatbelt, reduces the risk of serious injuries or death by up to 90%.
