According to an official Air Force source, the cancellation of this initiative was due to an "increased operational engagement in the coming months," related to several national and international missions and exercises to be carried out in the coming months.

According to the same source, the goal is to avoid overburdening the branch's human resources.

Since July, the Air Force has also been providing support for emergency medical transport, a temporary solution due to the inability of the company (Gulf Med) awarded the service to begin operations on July 1, as stipulated in the contract signed with INEM.

The branch has also recently been involved in firefighting, in addition to fulfilling its other missions.

The last base to host this initiative was Air Force Base No. 1 in Sintra, whose event took place this weekend. This year, activities were also held in Ota, Ovar, and Lages, in the Azores.

The events scheduled for the air bases of Monte Real, Montijo, and Beja, at Maneuver Airfield No. 3 on the island of Porto Santo, Madeira, and at the Samora Correia Shooting Range in Alcochete, have been cancelled.

The "Open Bases" initiative consists of opening several Air Force bases across the country to the public for capability demonstrations and various activities, such as the traditional "first flight" events, where citizens have the opportunity to fly in an Air Force aircraft.
