At a public meeting, Mayor Manuel Sequeira said that on Sunday, "a third runoff was detected," which was immediately reported, following a "blockage in Dr. Manuel Arriaga Square at 3 pm, due to technical issues."

The beach is closed to swimming until the results of the requested water tests are released.

In August, the municipality of Leiria filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) seeking an investigation into the two effluent discharges that stopped swimming on the beach and led to more than one hundred people seeking medical attention due to water contamination.

In the complaint filed against unknown individuals, the city government is requesting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the clogging of a sewage pipe and the discharge of sewage onto the beach twice, at the end of July and in the second week of August.

The two incidents required the closure of Nazaré beach on August 1st and 13th.

After the first incident, 116 people were treated at the Leiria Region Local Health Unit (ULS) for symptoms related to water contamination.

The city government's president told Lusa news agency that he had "suspicions of various kinds," including the possibility of "some illegal construction [connected to the pipeline] that is compromising the quality of the water that reaches the storm drain."

Another cause of the problem may lie, according to Sequeira, in the placement of unsuitable products in the pipes, including "oils and grease," allegedly from restaurants.
