The protocol for the installation of the equipment, which uses crime prevention technology, was signed with the Public Security Police (PSP).

The video surveillance cameras will be installed in the historic part of the city, which is considered a "priority area" due to its "unique characteristics," according to the Faro district city hall.

Video surveillance is intended to be an auxiliary and complementary tool for security forces, with the PSP responsible for handling, monitoring, and processing the data.

According to the Tavira City Council, the system "does not replace" police presence, but acts as a complementary tool, providing a deterrent effect and the ability to respond quickly to criminal offenses, aiding in the identification of criminal suspects.

Video surveillance respects constitutional rules and the rights, freedoms, and guarantees of citizens, constituting a technological reinforcement for the safety and protection of people, animals, and property, the municipality emphasises.

Tavira is the sixth municipality in the Algarve to implement video surveillance equipment in public spaces, a system which is already in operation in Olhão, Portimão, Loulé, Faro, and Albufeira.

Lagos and Lagoa are other Algarve municipalities that hope to soon move forward with the installation of video surveillance systems in various locations.
