"It was a collision between trains transporting passengers to the beach, and there were 50 passengers on board at the time," a source from the Algarve Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command told Lusa.

The passengers were of "various nationalities" and "there are 14 injured," he added, indicating that the alert was received at 3:55 pm yesterday, 16 September.

Triage teams from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) assisted the passengers at the scene, he added, emphasising that the INEM liaison officer with Civil Protection has already confirmed the existence of 14 injuries, "all minor."

An emergency and rescue unit consisting of 29 personnel and 11 vehicles was dispatched to the scene, the Civil Protection source also reported.
