According to a recent study by Compare the Market AU, 84% of Lisbon residents live within walking distance of schools and healthcare facilities, the highest proportion of any city in the top 10.

The study assessed 90 cities worldwide, measuring factors such as pedestrian infrastructure, car-free zones, cycling paths, safety, public transport costs, and overall mobility without a car. While Prague, Vienna, and Tokyo claimed the top three spots for overall walkability, Lisbon’s strength lies in its urban planning and proximity to vital services.

Other European cities dominate the list, with seven of the ten most walkable urban areas located on the continent. Prague leads with a combination of high safety and accessible public transport, Vienna impressed with its extensive cycling network, and Tokyo benefits from efficient infrastructure, allowing over 83% of residents to commute without a car.

In contrast, cities in the United States, including Houston and Los Angeles, ranked lowest due to car-centric infrastructure, sprawling urban çayouts, and limited pedestrians.

Lachlan More, Digital PR Advisor at Compare the Market AU, highlighted the importance of pedestrian-friendly cities. “Easy access to healthcare, education, and transport directly influences daily convenience and overall quality of life. Cities with better infrastructure for pedestrians are often more desirable, which can affect property prices and cost of living.”

Lisbon’s ranking underscores the capital’s ongoing efforts to improve urban life for its residents, reducing reliance on vehicles while promoting health, sustainability, and accessibility.
