It is a relatively long beach, surrounded by high, golden cliffs. These cliffs provide perfect protection from the wind, which is why Vale Centeanes tends to be calm even on windy days. The beautiful turquoise water and caves create a unique swimming experience.
From this beach, you have direct access to the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, one of the most scenic coastal hikes. It is called the Seven Hanging Valleys because the path crosses seven dry stream valleys that “hang” above the sea, no longer reaching the ocean due to erosion.
Following this route, you will pass the Alfanzina lighthouse and continue toward Praia do Carvalho, Benagil and Praia Marinha, which many consider to be one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches. The trail difficulty is moderate, with some ups and downs along the cliffs. Some parts are easier to walk than others.
You can also take a coastal walk in the opposite direction, passing by the Tivoli hotel and arrive in the village of Carvoeiro. Then, the beautiful Carvoeiro boardwalk takes you straight to the village centre.
If you do not feel like walking far, it is worth taking the wooden stairs at the eastern end of the beach. This is also the beginning of the trail, and from here you can enjoy excellent views over the coast.
As a walking lover myself, I often take a stroll from Centeanes beach along the pavement by the road into the centre of Carvoeiro. It’s a nice and easy walk, an alternative to the hiking route, if you prefer something more relaxing.
This beach offers plenty of facilities and activities. Lifeguards, toilets, sunbeds, and a beachfront restaurant mean you can stay comfortably from morning until sunset. In addition, you can enjoy several water sports or cave tours by boat, as well as kayaking and paddleboarding to explore these natural wonders.
Restaurant O Stop is located directly on the beach and offers spectacular views. Open daily from 10am until 11.30 at night, their menu features fresh seafood, meat dishes, salads and delicious Portuguese desserts such as almond and carob pie or pudim flan.
This beach can get really crowded, especially in the peak season, but if you have a chance to visit in September or October, you will discover one of the most scenic and enjoyable beaches in the Algarve.
