In a statement, the entity managing Portugal's road and rail networks reported that traffic on the bridge "will be restricted" while additional work on the project is underway.
On weekdays, during the daytime, traffic will alternate in both directions, regulated by traffic lights and with speed limits, the statement said.
During "nighttime, weekends, and on days when no work is scheduled, traffic will be in both directions, but with speed limits," it specified.
IP justifies the restrictions as "necessary to ensure safety conditions for the completion of the project and the structural reinforcement of the road bridge."
Closed in October 2024 due to its deteriorated condition, the bridge connects the two banks of the Vascão River, in the municipalities of Alcoutim, in the Faro district, and Mértola, in the Beja district, via National Road 122.
The work to reinforce the bridge's structure, repave the deck, and improve pedestrian conditions represented an investment of 2.9 million euros, financed by EU funds.
