Following its regular meeting on seismic activity in September, the IVAR Crisis Office reports that the alert level has been raised from V1 to V2 for the fissure volcanic system west of Terceira, "due to crustal deformation data."

IVAR's V1 alert refers to "weak activity, slightly above reference levels, of tectonic, hydrothermal, and/or magmatic origin."

The V2 alert refers to a volcanic system "in a phase of instability," with "moderate activity, clearly above reference levels, of tectonic, hydrothermal, and/or magmatic origin."

The IVAR also decided to maintain the V2 alert status for the Santa Bárbara volcano, also on Terceira Island.

According to the IVAR, on Terceira Island, seismic activity, "although of low magnitude, remained clearly above reference levels, particularly at the Santa Bárbara volcano and the western fissure volcanic system of Terceira."

Seismicity was also recorded between Cinco Ribeiras and Angra do Heroísmo, according to the IVAR, which highlights that the strongest event reached a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale and was felt in the western sector of Terceira Island with a maximum intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli scale.

With September being the month of "highest seismic activity in 2025," IVAR reports that "although not very intense, some crustal deformation continued to be recorded in the Santa Bárbara volcano area," which, in 2025, "began to extend to the fissure volcanic system."

"No anomalies were observed in gas levels that could be related to the current seismovolcanic crisis," IVAR states.

IVAR, on the other hand, maintained the V1 alert status for seismic activity on São Jorge Island, notably in the Rosais area, which "remains slightly above reference levels."
