The balance was released by the PSP, which revealed that it had checked more than 9.5 million people at Portuguese airports in the first six months of the year. The same police force revealed that more than 15,600 people were intercepted and precautionary measures were imposed in 6,052 cases.
In total, 77 judicial expulsion cases and 23 coercive removal cases were opened. According to the PSP, 142 citizens were also helped to return voluntarily to their country of origin. There were also 150 requests for international protection.
The PSP carries out its border control duties at nine border posts at the airports of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Beja, Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores (Santa Maria, São Miguel and Terceira/Aerogare das Lajes).
Although they are not considered air border posts, the PSP also has border control duties at Tires Aerodrome and Horta Airport.
