In the last municipal elections, held on September 26, 2021, the abstention rate was 46.35%, the second-highest in local elections, slightly below the record 47.4% reached in 2013.
Now, abstention has decreased compared to the last four elections for local authorities and was the lowest since the 39.02% recorded in 2005.
The local elections with the highest turnout rates were those of 1979 and 1982, with abstention rates below 30%, respectively, 26.23% and 28.58%. In the first democratic municipal elections in 1976, there was an abstention rate of 35.42%.
In local government elections from 1985 to 2005, abstention rates consistently exceeded 35%, rising to 40.99% in 2009 and never dropping below that level. A new record of 47.4% was set in 2013, a figure that has not been surpassed since.
