The validity will be extended for another six months only for cards expiring between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025. Previously, these cards were only valid until 15 October 2025; however, they will now be valid until 15 April 2026, according to AIMA.
Cards that expire on 1 July 2025 will also benefit from a six-month extension to their validity.
According to the Público newspaper, the extension of the validity of residence cards comes after AIMA's difficulties in managing to renew all the cards within the previously stipulated period.
AIMA also explains that foreign residents should always have in their possession and present, when necessary, proof of the renewal request, which is issued by the official portal and is accompanied by a QR code. Expired cards should also be presented when necessary.

AIMA is pathetic

What about the extension of D7 visas because AIMA can’t get around to setting a residency appointment for people.

The phrasing “ Cards that expire on 1 July 2025 will also benefit from a six-month extension to their validity.” is unclear. I cannot find anything that includes cards expired on or after 1 July 2025 being covered under this new extension. Would you please clarify?

What about travels with an expired card outside of the schengen area ? Is this possible without having the proof of payment ? p.s : I have registered through the portal but haven't received the payment link yet. It's ridiculous.

How do D7 visa holders acquire a NISS. Social security won't give you one without a stamped letter from AIMA saying you need one but AIMA won't give such a letter without an appointment and it's close to impossible to get an appointment D7 visa is for retired people, to get a NISS you need to have proof of work!!! D7 visa holders spend their pension in Portugal and take nothing from the state, why would the government want us to leave?

Diane - To get a NISS, you need to go in person to the loja de cidadão "Citizens Shop" location in Porto, and apply for one. You likely will need to go early before opening, and wait in line to ensure you will be seen. Once inside, let the attendant know you are there to apply for a NISS. They should be able to help you apply for one. Be sure to go to a Citizen's Shop location that does the NISS application. Good luck to you!!
