The most chosen destinations by the Portuguese are within the national territory, but also in other European countries.

When considering the intention to travel during the month of January, the number of interested Portuguese people rises to 67%, and many opted to make the reservation in November, as this is when it is usually possible to purchase trips with discounts that can reach up to 25%.

Travel time

The same study, cited by Publituris, also reveals the intended duration of each trip. In conclusion, the study states that, during Christmas trips, 44% of Portuguese people opt for holidays lasting a maximum of three days, while 26% intend to travel for at least three days and extend the trip up to five days. 14% prefer to travel for a week, and 13% of Portuguese people choose to travel for between eight and fifteen days.

Travel expenses

In terms of expenses, Jetcost.pt found that, on average, approximately 786 euros are spent per person.

Means of transport

The majority of Portuguese people choose to travel by car, according to Jetcost.pt, with 57% of respondents revealing that this is their preferred means of transport. Following this, 32% of Portuguese people choose to travel by plane, 6% by bus, 3% by train, and 2% by boat.

Travel buddy

47% of Portuguese people say that during the Christmas period, they plan family trips, while 28% intend to travel with their romantic partner. 16% of Portuguese people will travel with friends and 9% will travel alone.

Favourite destinations

61% of Portuguese people prefer to vacation within the country, while 35% opt for traveling outside of Portugal. However, despite being a minority, 6% of Portuguese people intend to travel not only to national destinations, but also to foreign destinations.

Among the most sought-after Portuguese destinations, Lisbon stands out, followed by Porto. Next come the Autonomous Regions, with São Miguel Island in the Azores leading the preference, followed by Madeira and Terceira Island, also in the Azores archipelago. Porto Santo (Madeira), Faro, Pico Island (Azores), Faial Island (Azores) and São Jorge Island (Azores) are also some of the favourite destinations of the Portuguese.

Abroad, the Portuguese prefer to stay in Europe, with Paris being the most sought-after city to be visited by the Portuguese during the Christmas period of 2025. Next come London, Barcelona, ​​Rome, Prague, Vienna, Luxembourg, Brussels, Genoa and Amsterdam.
