In a statement, the municipality in the Faro district informed that the request was made personally by the mayor of that municipality, Marlene Guerreiro, to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, in a meeting held in Lisbon.

The meeting between the mayor and Miguel Pinto Luz aimed to provide an update on the efforts to restore traffic flow on the EN2 highway, at kilometre 710, between Barranco do Velho and São Brás de Alportel, where traffic has been closed since last June for safety reasons.

According to the municipality, the interruption of traffic at kilometre 710+500, in the Ameixial–São Brás de Alportel direction, has forced significant detours, with “strong impacts” on regional and local mobility.

“Urgency”

Marlene Guerreiro also asked the minister for “the utmost urgency” in advancing the road rehabilitation project up to its connection with the Via do Infante.

For the mayor, these interventions are “essential to safeguard road safety, improve mobility and guarantee territorial cohesion,” emphasizing that “São Brás de Alportel cannot continue waiting for solutions that are fundamental for the present and future of the municipality.”

At the same time, Marlene Guerreiro expressed “full availability” to collaborate in all technical and administrative procedures that would allow for the acceleration of the processes.

The City Council recalls that the requalification of the EN2 section up to the A22 is a long-standing demand, considered “structural” to overcome road safety problems and promote the attractiveness, economic and social development of the territory, and the quality of life of the population.

According to the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, Minister Miguel Pinto Luz presented the schedule for the interventions on the EN2, indicating that the intervention for the road restoration north of the municipality “is awaiting funding from the Ministry of Finance, estimating a six-month timeframe for the execution of the work”.

Regarding the requalification of the EN2 to the south and its connection to the A22, the minister committed to launching the tender in the third quarter of 2026 and starting the work in 2027, according to the municipality's statement.

Dispute

However, she said, it is “necessary to obtain the disintegration of this section of the Algarve Litoral concession road, which is the subject of a legal dispute with the State,” she added.

Marlene Guerreiro also alerted the Minister of Infrastructure about the “impacts and consequences” that the diversion of road traffic is causing on Municipal Road 1202, “due to excessive use.”

According to the city hall, at the meeting, it was “agreed” between the parties that the repair of the Municipal Road would be carried out within the scope of the work to restore traffic flow on the EN2.
