“At the end of October 2025, 297,722 unemployed individuals were registered with the employment services of the mainland and autonomous regions,” according to the IEFP.
“The total number of registered unemployed in the country was lower than that recorded in the same month of 2024 (-14,788; -4.7%), as well as that of the previous month (-4,878; -1.6%),” it is also indicated.
Compared to the same month of 2024, registered unemployment decreased in all regions of the country, with the most significant decline observed in Madeira (-19.1%).
Algarve increase
In relation to September, the number of registered unemployed decreased in the North (-3.9%), Central (-1.6%) and Lisbon and Tagus Valley (-1.7%) regions, but increased in the other areas of the country. “The most significant increase [was recorded] in the Algarve region (+19%),” highlights the IEFP.
On the other hand, regarding the differences between the various sectors, the IEFP reports that in October, unemployment showed a decrease in all areas of activity compared to the same month of 2024. In the agricultural sector, the decline was 5.1%, in services it was 1.3%, and in the secondary sector it was 2.4%.
The note also reveals that unfilled job offers at the end of October 2025 increased sharply year-on-year, but fell sequentially.
In total, this represents 18,768 job vacancies, 58.1% more than a year ago, but 0.2% less than in September, according to the IEFP (Institute for Employment and Vocational Training).
