Olympian Mariana Machado confirmed her favouritism when she arrived in the Algarve, winning the race in 25.33 minutes and equalling Fernanda Ribeiro's five titles, three behind record holder Rosa Mota and two behind Dulce Félix.
"I'm very happy, it's always good to win another national champion title both individually and collectively for Sporting de Braga, without a doubt I'm very proud. Above all I'm extremely proud [to be a five-time champion], it's a great pleasure to continue practising this discipline that has given me so much experience and good times and I think it shows my resilience and spirit of sacrifice, because being consistent over the years is the hardest thing in our sport," she said.
In second place was another Sporting de Braga athlete, Laura Taborda (26.17.90), ahead of Sporting's Ana Mafalda Ferreira (26.36.10), with the Braga women taking their fourth consecutive team title with 17 points, followed by the “lionesses” (44) and Beira-Mar (48).
The podium in the men's race was monopolised by Kenyan athletes, who only counted towards the team rankings, with Victor Kimosop (Benfica) winning in 21.55.80 minutes, ahead of Charles Rotich (Sporting), in 21.58.50, and Edwin Bett (Sporting de Braga), in 22.09.90.
