The initiative took place on 28 November, following an overload in the online appointment system. According to the Times of Israel, the announcement brought an unpredictable number of people, with queues stretching as far as the building's underground car park.
Demand for Portuguese documents
Since 2015, there has been an increase in demand for Portuguese documents in Israel. It was in 2015 that a law was passed allowing descendants of Sephardic Jews affected by the Inquisition to formalise an application for Portuguese nationality.
However, in 2023, the Portuguese government announced the end of the extraordinary route, which led to greater restrictions being approved, as well as proof of the connection and emotional ties with Portugal, and a minimum residence of three years in the country.
Israeli citizens' interest in Portuguese nationality has grown due to the advantages linked to European mobility. The lower cost of living and access to higher education are also reasons why Israeli citizens want to live in Portugal.
Demand has increased even more since the reignition of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with citizens seeking a second chance at residence for security reasons.
Validity of documents
Although an extension to the validity of Portuguese passports to 10 years has been approved, those who apply for nationality in Tel Aviv will receive a passport with five years validity.
