Much of Portugal is expected to be at a standstill today as the two largest trade unions, SGPT and UGT, have called a strike against the labour reforms proposed by the government.
Public transport is being affected, with only minimum services being offered in much of the country, while the Lisbon Metro is closed completely.
TAP airline has guaranteed only a small number of flights for the day, while easyJet has also cancelled many flights to Portugal, with a small number still taking place.
Hospitals are only operating with minimum services; however, all emergency services will be maintained, but longer than usual delays are expected.
In schools, the two main teachers' unions have joined the strike, FENPROF and CGTP. This means that the majority of schools are expected to be closed, and the strike in schools could extend into Friday.

The unpaid mass being led by the nose, by the paid union representatives. If you all bothered to look beyond the ends of your noses, you would know that to effect change and improve your lot long term, YOU need to also change. Workplace reform is inevitable and necessary, unless you wish to continue to live in the dark ages. The proposed changes are an erosion of nothing. They are an opportunity to move out of the early 20th century and into a more modern and flexible future. Do not repeat the mistakes of the past, and stay anchored to industrial age practices. Embrace the digital age, even if your job has not yet moved into that era...it will. If you do not move your mindset, then you are the past, and no longer relevant. Sure, change is hard, but not as hard as being unemployable and without cash....withholding labour just plays into the hands of those eager to replace you with AI and basic automation.
