The weather forecast for Tuesday is marked by a gradual change in atmospheric conditions in Portugal, with a reduction in rainfall throughout the day, but with a significant increase in wind intensity, especially in coastal areas, due to the entry of cold air of maritime polar origin.
Essentially, this is a transitional day after a very unstable period, in which the wind takes on the main role in the weather, while temperatures fall again and snow returns to higher altitude areas.
Snow
A cold maritime polar air mass is affecting the country, causing a drop in both minimum and maximum temperatures. At the same time, snowfall is expected above 1000 to 1200 meters altitude, with a higher probability of accumulation in the higher mountain ranges, according to the weather website Luso Meteo.
In the interior of the country, precipitation tends to be more limited. After a Monday marked by very overcast skies in practically all of Portugal, Tuesday should already show clear skies, mainly in the inland regions.
Wind
The main meteorological concern of the day will be the intensity of the wind, which will blow from the North, moderate to strong on the coast. The average wind should reach values between 30 and 45 km/h, with gusts that can reach 70 km/h. Between the end of the morning and the end of the afternoon, the wind may even blow strongly on the coast south of Cabo Mondego, with average speeds between 50 and 65 km/h and gusts that can reach 90 to 100 km/h, especially along the coastal strip.
Tornadoes
The combination of strong winds, some convective instability, and wind shear creates favorable conditions for the occurrence of localized phenomena, such as tornadoes.
These phenomena are difficult to predict accurately and, if they occur, should be verified mainly on the central and southern coast, where meteorological models indicate greater instability, according to the source cited above.
Rain
Frequent showers are expected on the coast, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, with greater intensity on the central coast. In the Sertão region, the showers will be more dispersed, although they may become more frequent in the afternoon. Any precipitation in mountainous areas will occur in the form of snow above the aforementioned elevations.
Lower temperatures
Minimum temperatures should generally be between 3 and 8 ºC, with slightly higher values on the coast south of Cabo Mondego. Maximum temperatures will range between 8 and 15 ºC.
Cities like Porto and Lisbon should register maximum temperatures around 13 to 14 ºC, while in Guarda the values may reach 6 to 7 ºC. In the Algarve, Faro may still reach around 16 ºC, remaining the mildest region.
Very rough sea
The sea state will continue to be rough, with maximum waves between 5 and 6 meters on the west coast, where the sea water temperature should be around 14 to 16 ºC. On the south coast of the Algarve, the swell will be less significant, with waves up to 2 to 3 meters and water temperature close to 17 ºC, according to the same source.
