The IPMA had previously issued an orange warning until Thursday.

In a new statement, the Institute indicates that the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra will be under an orange warning until 3 am on Saturday, with northwest waves forecast at 5 to 5.5 meters, with a maximum height of 10 meters.

Also due to the sea conditions, the IPMA has placed the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon and Beja under a yellow warning until 7 am on Saturday.

Due to rough seas, the maritime bars of Caminha, Vila Praia de Âncora, Esposende, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Douro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, and Cascais are closed to all navigation today, according to information available on the National Maritime Authority's website.

The Aveiro and Viana do Castelo bars are closed to vessels with lengths less than 15 and 12 meters, respectively.

Rain warning

The IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) also issued a yellow warning for the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, and Braga due to occasionally heavy rain between 5 PM and 9 PM on Friday.

The Institute also placed the north coast of Madeira Island and Porto Santo under a yellow warning between 3 PM on Friday and 7 AM on Saturday due to the forecast of rough seas, with northwest waves of 4 to 4.5 meters expected.

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a "moderate to high risk weather situation," and the yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation.
