Access to the central massif of the Serra da Estrela mountain range has been closed to traffic since 7:20 am due to snowfall, a civil protection source said.

“Sections 11, 12 and 13 of National Road 338 were closed late this morning due to snowfall. This is the Piornos [in the municipality of Covilhã]-Torre-Lagoa Comprida [in the municipality of Seia] connection,” a source from the Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela told the Lusa news agency.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts snowfall above 1,400 meters of altitude this Friday.
