Due to the heatwave that is hitting the country, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) has warned of the health risks, recommending that people drink water, avoid alcoholic beverages and opt for cool or air-conditioned environments.
In the set of recommendations published on its website on Friday, it advises people to stay in cool or air-conditioned environments for at least two to three hours a day, avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., use sunscreen with a factor equal to or higher than 30, reapplying it every two hours and after swimming at the beach or pool.
It also recommends that citizens wear light-coloured, light and loose clothing, covering most of their body and not forgetting a hat and sunglasses with ultraviolet protection, and warns of the need to pay special attention to groups that are more vulnerable to heat, such as children, the elderly, chronically ill, pregnant women, and workers who work outdoors, and says that children under six months of age should not be exposed to direct or indirect sunlight.
The IPMA predicts that today, on the mainland, the weather will continue to be hot, with a generally partly cloudy sky, and the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms inland, especially in the North and Centre regions and during the afternoon.
Fog is also expected in some areas of the western coastal strip and the maximum temperature will start to drop.
According to the IPMA, the minimum temperatures will range between 17 (Aveiro) and 26 degrees Celsius (Faro) and the maximum temperatures between 24 (Aveiro) and 43 (Beja).
