In Lousada, in the Porto district, during the presentation of the Socialist candidate for City Council, the PS secretary-general recalled that, when Brexit occurred in the United Kingdom, "a cross-cutting team from several ministries was created, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," a dynamic he now wants to see adopted by the current Government.
"It is very important that the Ministry of Economy meet with representatives of these sectors as soon as possible and find mitigation measures and special support for these sectors," he emphasized, referring to several sectors, namely textiles and clothing, footwear, and wine.
Stating that "the impacts of the United States' tariff policy will be felt throughout the European Union and also in Portugal," José Luís Carneiro said that "it was already predicted that, with 10% rates, Europe could see a decline in wealth of around 30% by 2025" and that "it was calculated that the loss of European income could reach around 50% by 2026."
"Which means that, with 30% rates, the impacts will be very significant. It is very important that the government has thoughtful and structured responses to address these impacts, to a genuine shock to our economy," he said.
José Luís Carneiro recalled that "for several months now" the US has been talking about the possibility of adopting tariffs, which is why he believes that "the Government will have solutions and measures to mitigate their effects."
