The low-cost airline has introduced a €117 fee for travellers who arrive at the airport less than 40 minutes before their flight’s scheduled departure. This change, in many cases, exceeds the cost of the ticket itself.
The penalty applies even if passengers manage to rebook onto a later flight. Those who arrive up to an hour after their original flight has departed will also be charged, provided other flights are available.
Ryanair says the policy is designed to improve punctuality and encourage better planning. However, critics argue the move disproportionately affects those delayed by traffic, long security queues, or public transportation issues.
Passengers have voiced frustration, calling the fee a “cash grab” that punishes minor mistakes and turns unexpected delays into guaranteed profit for the airline.
The late-arrival fine follows a pattern of controversial Ryanair policies. Failure to check in online at least two hours before departure results in additional airport fees. The airline has increasingly pushed for a digital-only experience to streamline operations and reduce airport staffing, often at the expense of unprepared or less tech-savvy travellers.
While Ryanair advises arriving early, checking in days in advance, and monitoring flight updates, even well-prepared passengers risk being caught out by unforeseen delays.
The airline has defended its policy, but with frustration mounting online, consumer groups are warning travellers to read the fine print and plan carefully, or risk paying far more than expected.
The power of some airline companies should scare even governments.

As someone who travels with Ryanair otfen, I totally agree with this. I often see people strolling up to the gate 10-20 minutes before, expecting to be loaded. This causes delays for the other 150+ people already on the plane wiating to go. I also agree with cabin bag policy, again seeing people with bags that are obvioulsy 15-18kgs and much bigger than allowed, expecting to get on and have their bag loaded, when everyone else follows the rules and is OK. To single out those that cause disruption is right, as the majority of people should not suffer becuase of the minority.

I think the Ryanair ceo is only looking after his bonus pocket trying to reach the company goal so as he can get his fat bonus check. I think the EU should ban Ryanair from flying within European airspace. He doesn’t want the pay his crew the 13th and 14th check but wants to get his end of the year bonus. People lets fly other LC Airlines and dump Ryanair.
Micheal has the attitude that all countries have to abide by what he request as if his holding a golden spoon. It’s frustrating how they don’t care and don’t want to listen to the PAX reasons. Please boycott Ryanair. EasyJet is such a pleasure to fly with without treating the passengers as kids.
I would like Micheal o Leary to give me a call and I would give him a mouthful.

So I can whine that passengers will be compensated when the plane leaves the gate or takes off late due to no fatigue l fault of the passengers? No, you say? How strange...
On a more serious note, airlines always double book a couple of passengers, so any fees for missing the flight or not checking in is a pure money grab and a scam on the airlines part.

We were also late to the airport, missed our flights and offered a new sear the next day for £100 which included the same conditions as the tickets we bought. Customer service was great and very helpful. Why do people think that they are above regulations, why should other passengers have to suffer bad management, and why on earth should I pay priority to find some inconsiderate clown has put a huge rucksack in my luggage space. People only learn when their pockets are pinched, not by warnings. Next time I'm definitely going to think twice where I eat when I'm travelling

They'd want to be more punctual themselves. On a flight boarding 10.15, last call 10.25. Only boarding at 11.10 and still waiting to depart at 11.28 flight fr9912 rome-dublin

Well ironically this happened to me last week they sent me multiple emails to use their app which I did and we arrived to our gate which was number 20 to an empty room after finally finding a staff member they told us we need to go back to the entrance and see what gate it had been changed to, we ran down to see it was gate 24 then ran back up to be told we cant come on the plane all of this took us 20mins we only had 25mins from screen telling us departure times to the gate closing.
We've tried speaking with ryanair and they just fob us off

Not so low-cost anymore, is it? Stop flying on those rubbish metal tubes. To help convince flyers, Ryanair flies only Boeing 747, you know, those that keep crashing. Give the middle finger to O'Leary
