According to the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) monthly bulletin, total electricity production was 3,935 gigawatt-hours (GWh), 31.5% more than in the same month in 2024, with a 225 GWh increase in wind generation standing out. In the production mix, wind power accounted for 25.2% and solar power 20.4%, while hydropower contributed 20.2% and bioenergy 5.7%.
Portugal was the European country analysed with the highest percentage of wind power production in the month, at 25.7%, ahead of Denmark (22.7%) and Germany (18.2%). Water storage in dams increased 8.8% compared to July of last year, reaching 80%.
The average price of electricity in the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL) was €63.4 per megawatt-hour (MWh), with 1,212 non-consecutive hours between January and July in which renewable generation fully supplied electricity consumption on the continent.
In the same period, special-regime production resulted in accumulated savings of approximately €4.984 billion in the wholesale market, equivalent to €164.4/MWh.
From January to July, renewable energy incorporation in electricity generation reached 79.6%, placing Portugal in fourth place in the European ranking, behind Norway, Denmark, and Austria.
For APREN's executive president, Pedro Amaral Jorge, "July's results reinforce the crucial role of renewables in Portugal's energy transition, guaranteeing environmental, economic, and strategic benefits."
However, the executive warns that "to consolidate this trajectory, it is essential to invest in strengthening networks, storage solutions, and mechanisms that increase the flexibility of the electrical system."
