Jenny, President of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) and many of the other community stands were early ensuring everything was in its place. “But it gives us a chance to swap info before we get started!”. Good.

Amongst them were abandoned animal shelters, Cadela Carlota (CC), and Animal Rescue Algarve (ARA). Also, for the non-furry ‘humans’ were the ‘Emporium’ group and Soup Kitchen. Carlos Filipe, Animal Rights, Author and Photographer making his way through the stands, many of them he has worked with during the years.

Carlos feels, like ARA, that education is primarily the main tool to getting into people’s minds. “As early as possible!” Carlos, João and Paul from ARA work together on many projects. Brigitte from Cadela Carlota is holding their new 2026 calendar another feather in Carlos’ cap. “We have to work together he smiles.”

His recent video with APAA’s Jenny and ‘Legacy’ Ambassador Anita is another testimony to the close-knit community within the walls of the animal kingdom. Parvovirus, the deadly highly-contagious animal disease, is prevalent in the Algarve. Several animals have died in the CC shelter so they have shut their doors for safety for a couple of weeks. “You just cannot be too careful. The message is, get your pets vaccinated as soon as possible. As young as possible.” All are saddened by the news.

Joy and her co-worker from the Soup Kitchen are busy boiling an imaginary soup. They too understand the furry problem from their point of view. “Many of our homeless have pets. Believe it! They need company and care like everyone else. Especially so! We often find a spare bone or two to help.” APAA’s motto, ‘Here to Help,’ stands in good stead. Carrying on regardless.
