When the winter chill descends across Northern Europe, why not consider escaping to a place where festive lights twinkle under blue skies and outdoor living remains a daily pleasure? Welcome to the Algarve, where the holiday season is a unique blend of ancient tradition, mild weather, and sun-kissed celebrations.

If you are considering a glorious winter retreat or a prudent property investment before the next high season, Lagos offers an unbeatable combination, and Boavista Golf and Spa provides the perfect sun-splashed winter wonderland to experience it all.

A Winter Wonderland Bathed in Sunshine

Unlike the frosty climates often associated with Christmas, the Algarve enjoys a mild winter, with temperatures typically ranging between 10°C and 17°C (50–63°F). Lagos, in particular, basks in over 300 days of sunshine annually. Whilst December is technically the wettest month, the rain usually falls in short bursts, leaving clear skies and plenty of daylight perfect for enjoying the outdoors.

Lagos maintains a steady vitality year-round thanks to its permanent population, meaning the town feels pleasantly active, unlike smaller resorts that close down. This blend of quiet charm and holiday bustle can be enjoyed in cafés in the historic streets or in cosy restaurants, with a warm mulled wine or a cold beer. The blend of tourism and local activity makes it an ideal spot to spend the holidays, offering an authentic Portuguese atmosphere.

Discovering Local Festive Cheer: Markets and Traditions

The holiday spirit is palpable in Lagos, which runs a diverse festive programme from late November through early January. The heart of the local celebration is the Christmas Village at Praça do Infante, which runs from 30 November to 6 January. This charming market offers a haven of Christmas cheer for the whole family, featuring a miniature train ride, an ecological ice rink, a sledging slope, and craft workshops. On weekends leading up to Christmas Eve, expect roaming performers, jugglers, and face painters.

The festivities usually begin with Santa's parade when Santa arrives on his sleigh in a lively procession of colourful performers and, of course, the Lapland legend himself, who will hand out free presents to the eager children cheering his arrival.

Beyond Lagos, you can explore other renowned festive fairs:

Vale do Lobo Christmas Market: The 15th edition of this eagerly awaited event is scheduled for 6 and 7 December, offering irresistible gifts, festive decorations, and regional delicacies, alongside a welcoming food court.

Loulé’s “Feira da Serra” Christmas Edition: Also running on 6 and 7 of December, this fair showcases the cultural richness of the mountains, featuring handicrafts and genuine agri-food products from the Serra do Caldeirão.

Portimão’s “A Christmas Dream” Festival will take place from 1 December to 6 January. The event will transform the city into a festive village with many activities, including a Christmas market, an ice rink, a life-sized Nativity scene, and a Christmas train. The program will also feature 28 shows across various locations in the city.

Away in a Manger

Beyond the markets, you will encounter deep-rooted Portuguese traditions, such as the profound love for nativity scenes (presépios). Great effort is put into building these displays in homes and public spaces. The largest Nativity in Portugal is located right here in the Algarve, in Vila Real de Santo António. This annual exhibit has been expanding for more than two decades, drawing thousands of visitors each Christmas. The giant Nativity scene covers an area of 240 square meters, occupying the entire António Aleixo Cultural Centre, with over 5,800 handcrafted figures.

Closer to home, the Lagos cultural scene celebrates this tradition with equal passion. Since 2011, José Cortes of Lagos has been expanding his own detailed Nativity, which is displayed at the Centro Cultural de Lagos from late November to early January. Sr. Cortes’ creation is intricate, featuring over 275 figurines representing villagers, artisans, and biblical characters, alongside 368 animals and 38 miniature buildings. Animated elements, such as moving carts, water wheels, and blacksmith fires, bring the Nativity story to life by blending it with rural Portuguese life.

Feasting and Festive Cheer

When it comes to feasting, Christmas dinner in Portugal (Consoada) is traditionally held on the evening of 24 December, often featuring bacalhau (codfish), boiled eggs, and cabbage. For dessert, you must try Bolo Rei (King Cake with candied fruits) or Bolo Rainha (Queen Cake with extra nuts), widely available between Christmas and 6 January.
