The Aljezur City Council justified the decision by citing the need to prioritise the safety and health of users and avoid the frequent succession of openings and closings that has been occurring recently, in an "inadequate" manner and "endangering the health of users and employees".
"The highest priority is safety and health, therefore a complete technical audit of the equipment will be carried out, with the aim of rigorously identifying the origin of the problems and defining the necessary steps to ensure a continuous and safe opening of the facilities," the Algarve City Council informed in a statement released through social media.
The municipality outlined a set of "interventions already identified" to be carried out, including the acquisition of a new dehumidifier, due to air humidity "above legal limits," or the evaluation of the viability of the ultraviolet system and identification of equipment problems, essential for the elimination of bacteria.
Among the actions to be carried out, according to the city hall, are also the “acquisition of automatic chlorine and pH controllers, since the current ones are irreparable,” the repair of a boiler and pumps in the competition pool, as well as the “installation of a gas exhaust system.”
It is also necessary to repair the solar system and acquire a heat sink, repair and treat the compensation tanks of both pools, the expansion joints in their bottom, and clean the dehumidifier ducts, among “other problems already identified,” noted the municipality of the Faro district.
The pools will thus be “temporarily closed” until the audit determines “the size of the intervention to be carried out, the respective costs involved, the schedule of actions and the date for the reopening” of the facility.
The City Council has committed to periodically and regularly informing the public about the progress of the work.
