The Portugal News: The Lisbon MBA Católica|Nova continues to stand out in the Financial Times Global MBA and Executive MBA rankings. What do these results represent for the MBA programmes?

Maria José Amich: The Financial Times rankings list the best MBA programmes in the world, and we are proud to be included since 2015. To participate, schools must hold AACSB and EQUIS accreditations, which both schools that form the joint venture of The Lisbon MBA, Nova SBE and CATÓLICA LISBON, have. Additionally, The Lisbon MBA holds the AMBA accreditation, placing us among the top 1% of MBAs worldwide with the Triple Crown Accreditation.

In the 2025 FT Global MBA Ranking, we were ranked #1 in Portugal, 24th in Europe, and 3rd in the world in International Course Experience. This reflects our strong partnership with MIT Sloan and the global learning opportunities we offer. Our cohorts are the most diverse in Portugal: 70% of full-time MBA students and nearly 40% of Executive MBA students are international, representing 25 nationalities. This diversity enriches learning and strengthens our global profile.

Our performance in these rankings recognises our commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and purposeful leadership. Together with Nova SBE, CATÓLICA LISBON, and MIT Sloan, we offer a transformative experience that positions Portugal in the global landscape of executive education.

TPN: The Lisbon MBA highlights a holistic approach to developing leaders. What does this mean in practice?

MJA: Our holistic model combines rigorous management education with a deep focus on transversal skills development, such as self-awareness and emotional intelligence, that are critical for leadership in today’s complex world. Students strengthen their cognitive capabilities, analytical thinking, strategic judgment, but also their executional skills: teamwork, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to inspire others.

We aim to develop principled leaders who are purpose-driven and able to navigate a volatile, complex world. The success of our students is reflected not only academically, but in their impact as professionals who bring positive change to their organisations and communities.

Career outcomes mirror this: we have 97% employability six months after graduation, an 89% average salary increase for full-time MBAs and 63% for Executive MBAs three years post-graduation. These achievements show how well our graduates translate learning into meaningful career advancement.

TPN: You offer two programmes: the International MBA and the Executive MBA. Who are they designed for?

MJA: The Lisbon International MBA is a 12-month full-time programme starting in January, ideal for high-potential professionals with at least three years of experience who want a career acceleration in an international and entrepreneurial environment. The programme includes a one-month immersion at MIT Sloan and two months of action learning, with options such as in-company assignments, entrepreneurship accelerators, or ESG consulting projects. Leadership development is a core component, supported by coaching and mentoring.

The Executive MBA is a 20-month part-time programme for professionals with an average of 15 years of experience who want to progress to senior leadership roles while balancing work and personal life. It includes a one-week immersion at MIT Sloan, specialised electives, exchange opportunities with top world ranked MBAs, and an optional Study Mission in Singapore. Peer coaching and mentoring with C-suite leaders further support professional growth.

TPN: Why should candidates choose The Lisbon MBA?

MJA: Because we offer a distinctive value proposition: world-class academic rigor, deep leadership development, global exposure, and a strong focus on personal transformation. We prepare professionals not just to advance their careers but to lead with purpose and positive impact.

Lisbon itself enhances the experience. It is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, known for innovation and entrepreneurship. Ranked 6th globally for English proficiency, it provides an accessible and welcoming environment for international students. Combined with Portugal’s high quality of life and safety, it creates an ideal setting for a life-changing experience.

We look for candidates who are curious, collaborative, values-driven, and eager to stretch themselves. We value diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, and we seek individuals who aspire to make a lasting impact on people, organisations, and society.

TPN: You have collaborated with MIT Sloan for over 15 years. Why was this partnership created?

MJA: Our collaboration with MIT Sloan is a fundamental pillar of our global strategy. We partnered with MIT to give our students access to one of the world’s leading institutions in entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology-driven management. MIT Sloan is globally recognised for pioneering research and for shaping future business models, and this partnership ensures that our programmes remain aligned with the most relevant global trends.

TPN: What does this partnership add to the student experience?

MJA: During the immersion at MIT Sloan in Boston, students engage with world-class MIT Sloan faculty in courses such as Disciplined Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation for Disruptive Strategies. They also connect with the broader MIT entrepreneurial ecosystem, including the Martin Trust Center, and interact with innovators, investors, and thought leaders.

A distinctive benefit is that graduates of The Lisbon MBA receive MIT Sloan Alumni Affiliate Status, granting access to the MIT Sloan alumni directory and events worldwide. This affiliation symbolises the strong integration of our programmes with the MIT community and gives graduates a lifelong global network.

TPN: How does the programme support career development?

MJA: An MBA is a powerful catalyst for professional transformation. At The Lisbon MBA, we help students not only improve their career prospects but advance in ways that align with their values and aspirations.

Our Career Management Center provides workshops, mentoring, CEO talks, and networking opportunities with senior executives. Students also benefit from a dynamic alumni network that includes graduates from The Lisbon MBA, Nova SBE, CATÓLICA LISBON, and MIT Sloan Affiliate alumni - a powerful source of lifelong support, learning, and professional opportunities.
