December History Talk

16 Dec, 6:00 PM
Biblioteca Municipal de Lagoa (Lagoa, Algarve)

Peter will present the story of the Pepper Wreck, when a fully laden East Indiaman was driven ashore and wrecked on the north bank of the River Tagus.

In a storm in 1606, Nossa Senhora dos Mártires shed its cargo of pepper into the water of the river, and much of the pepper was gathered from the shore by eager pillagers.

This event was reconstructed by pioneering nautical archaeological research in the years around the millenium. Please let us know if you wish to join us through peterbooker1347@gmail.com
