Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy has nominated world-renowned environmental advocate Greta Thunberg for the Honorary Freedom of The City of Dublin with Irish environmentalists Duncan Stewart taking home the same nomination.

At a meeting between Dublin Cities Protocol Committee, the votes were made and are now awaiting approval with the Dublin City Council expected to happen today.

Lord Mayor spoke of the nomination and stated: “I said already that I couldn’t think of any other Irish person that had done more over a such long period of time to spread the word about environmental issues other than Duncan. The Lord Mayor continued: “Greta has been a significant presence on the international stage, particularly in rallying young people to the climate challenge.”

Greta and Duncan join a stacked list of awardees such as John. F Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, and Gay Byrne.

The award has ancient meaning to the city and requires the Freemen or Women to defend Dublin from an attack, the right to bring goods without paying customs, and being able to vote in government elections.

Even though Greta won’t care about those foregone duties the significance of the award for the Swede campaigner cannot be understated since it is the first time the award will be given to environmental activist and is a sign that Dublin are pushing to be a greener city.
