After starting round three 10 shots down, McIlroy put himself in the running on Saturday with a scorching 63. Sunday morning, he played consistent golf to finish on 14 under par, one stroke ahead of nearest competitor Adrian Meronk.
With birdies at the second, eighth, and ninth holes, he reached the turn in 32 and overtook overnight leader Cameron Young, who finished third, to earn the massive €1.4 million triumph.
That put him at 15 under and gave him a comfortable three-point lead over the pursuing group. However, he faltered on the thirteenth hole, finding rough out left, and then bogeying his first putt of the day on a course he had birdied in his previous three rounds.
After that, McIlroy stabilised the ship with a string of pars, and Meronk's bogeyed 16 brought the lead back to two. The former world champion hit a wonderful chip that allowed him to finish with a par even though he discovered sand on the same hole.
Although Meronk made a birdie on the final hole to close the distance, McIlroy simply needed to par the final hole to win, which he accomplished.
The Northen Irish man’s success in the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in July marks his first tournament win since then.
