These figures are calculated daily and result from the combination of two analyses, which are the “Fire Weather Index” and the “rural fire hazard index”.
The “Fire Weather Index” is updated once a day by the IPMA and referred to as the FWI, while the “rural fire index” integrates a structural component of decadal periodicity and a conjunctural component of annual periodicity, taking into account the burnt areas of the last triennium, both the responsibility of the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF).
This process of integration of the two indices is executed by the application of a weighting matrix. The agglutination by administrative unit (Council and District) is done by weighing the highest values of the RCM index, considering the threshold of 20 percent of the heaviest classes (80 percent).
