A recent milestone highlights this trend: Lufthansa Technik, a global leader in technical aircraft services, has inaugurated its first training center in Portugal, underscoring the country’s growing appeal for aerospace investments.
Located in Santa Maria da Feira and approximately 35 kilometers south of Porto, the training center welcomed its first group of employees this week. This facility, situated just nine kilometers from the planned main production site (expected to be operational by the end of 2027), consists of two buildings: one for theoretical lessons and orientation, and the other dedicated to hands-on technical training. The training program is being overseen by experienced Lufthansa Technik professionals, ensuring a seamless transfer of knowledge and expertise.
This development forms part of Lufthansa Technik’s broader strategy to meet ambitious growth targets. Last year, the company announced a significant investment with a triple-digit million-euro commitment, to build a 54,000 square-meter facility in the Lusopark industrial area of Santa Maria da Feira. This facility will specialize in the repair of engine parts and aircraft components and is projected to create approximately 700 jobs. Beyond direct employment, this investment signals Portugal’s increasing relevance in the global aerospace supply chain.
The company has already recruited an initial group of professionals, including specialists in human resources, production management, and technical engineering. By the end of the year, an additional group of employees is expected to join the team. Notably, each advertised position has attracted an average of 150 applications, highlighting the strong local interest in contributing to a leading international aerospace enterprise.
Recognizing the importance of a skilled workforce, Lufthansa Technik Portugal is building partnerships with educational institutions across the country. A key collaboration is underway with Cenfim, a national vocational training center specializing in metal, metalworking, and electromechanical industries. This partnership supports the technical selection process for mechanics and other key roles, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of talent.
During the opening of the training center, representatives from Lufthansa Technik Portugal, trade and investment agencies, and local authorities underscored the significance of this milestone. The event showcased the strong commitment and collaborative spirit that have characterized the project from the outset.
Lufthansa Technik’s investment is part of a broader trend: Portugal’s emergence as an attractive destination for international aerospace companies. With a highly skilled workforce, a supportive business environment, and an increasingly sophisticated educational ecosystem, Portugal is establishing itself as a dynamic hub for innovation and growth in the aviation sector.
As the global aviation industry continues to evolve, Portugal’s proactive approach to attracting and supporting international air transport companies is positioning the country as a key player in shaping the future of aviation.
