In total, 1,000 participants from the region, Zamora and Ourense, will be surveyed to build a longevity observatory and produce from the data preventative recommendations before health problems emerge.
Coordinated in Portugal by the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, the two-year study begins in 2026, with Spanish partners Salamanca and Vigo, analysing living conditions, activity, diet and mental health to explain why the region’s elderly live longer – averaging 22 more years – than the national figure.
