"The municipality understands that the conditions are not right for holding the fair, not only due to the high degree of destruction of the public space, but also due to management and safety issues," reads the statement.
The fair was scheduled to take place between 27 February and 15 March in Rossio ao Sul do Tejo, next to Aquapolis Sul, an area heavily affected by the floods and which was completely submerged in recent days.
"It is a time for unity, for cleaning, for repairs and for doing everything to return to normality. The São Matias Fair will return in 2027," adds the municipality, in the district of Santarém.
With origins dating back to the 13th century, the fair is one of the oldest traditions in the municipality, annually bringing together carousels and other amusements, electronic games, stalls selling trinkets, an exhibition of vehicles and agricultural implements, bars, and food trucks selling fritters, popcorn, and cotton candy.
The event is considered one of Abrantes' cultural landmarks and an important factor in attracting and boosting local activity, usually featuring a complementary cultural, business, and entertainment program.
