High in the Serra Arestal, near Couto de Esteves, the Anta de Cerqueira stands as the most complete megalithic monument in the Aveiro district. Known locally as "Casa da Moura," this imposing structure was built between 4000 and 3500 BC, making it a silent witness to over five millennia of history. Its massive polygonal chamber, supported by nine upright stones and topped by a colossal capstone, serves as the centrepiece of an ancient necropolis consisting of eight distinct monuments.

Although labelled a necropolis, it is difficult to fully imagine what they were really built for.

During roadworks, the megalithic ancient mound was cut in such a way that the stone passage now opens directly onto the street. This collision of Neolithic engineering and modern infrastructure highlights the layers of history beneath our feet. With findings ranging from flint blades to fragments of gold, the site invites us to contemplate the sophisticated lives of our ancestors. It is a marvellous place to reflect on the enduring nature of human legacy.
