A total of 77 properties are available across 19 Portuguese municipalities, with applications remaining open until 17 September.

The IHRU announced that nine competitions will be held by lottery as part of the Affordable Rental Programme. The properties range from studios to six-bedroom homes, providing options for individual applicants as well as larger households.

In the Algarve, homes are available in Olhão, Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António. The IHRU has not specified how many properties are located in each municipality or provided a breakdown of the available sizes and rents in its general announcement.

Elsewhere in Portugal, the homes are located in Amadora, Aveiro, Beja, Cinfães, Évora, Figueira da Foz, Gondomar, Guarda, Lisbon, Penafiel, Peniche, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal, Sintra and Vila Nova de Gaia.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to individuals and households that meet the eligibility requirements of the Affordable Rental Programme, as well as the conditions listed in the notice for each competition.

The programme offers homes at more affordable rents than those usually found on the private market. Eligibility depends on the household’s income and the rent of the chosen property.

Applicants should therefore check the notice for the property they are interested in before submitting their application.

How to submit an application

Anyone wishing to apply must first obtain a Candidate Registration Certificate through the Affordable Rental Programme platform on the Housing Portal.

During this stage, applicants must provide information about everyone in the household and upload the requested documentation.

Once the certificate has been obtained, the application can be submitted through the IHRU Arrenda platform. As the homes will be allocated through a lottery, applications do not operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
