The project will take place on Rua Infante de Sagres in Parchal, one of the area's main roads, and is expected to take around 12 months to complete.
The renovation has been planned for several years and will involve much more than resurfacing the road, with significant improvements to underground infrastructure, pedestrian access and road safety.
As reported by Lagoa TV, the project includes the complete replacement of the water supply network, sewage system and rainwater drainage infrastructure.
Existing rainwater pipes currently located beneath the pavements will be moved into the roadway, freeing up space close to residential properties and improving the organisation of the underground networks.
The work will also involve lowering the road level, installing new pavements and replacing the existing road surface.
Electricity cables for public lighting and telecommunications infrastructure will be placed underground as part of the renovation.
Disruption expected during construction
Lagoa Council has warned that a project of this size will inevitably cause some disruption to residents, businesses and drivers who regularly use Rua Infante de Sagres.
With construction expected to continue for a year, people living and working in the area should prepare for temporary changes to their daily routines.
Mayor Luís Encarnação acknowledged that the work would cause inconvenience but said the long-term benefits would justify the disruption.
He explained that the project had been discussed for decades without moving forward and that the municipality had now decided to carry out the improvements.
The mayor also stressed that the work was not simply about laying new asphalt, but about addressing longstanding infrastructure problems and improving the road for future generations.
Improving accessibility and safety
The work will also include new pavements and a road surface, making it easier and safer for people to walk and drive through the area.
The new pavements and road surface should make Rua Infante de Sagres safer and more accessible, while the replacement of underground networks aims to improve the reliability of water supply and drainage.
The project forms part of Lagoa Council's wider efforts to renovate public spaces and improve infrastructure throughout the municipality.
For residents and businesses in Parchal, the next 12 months will bring construction activity and temporary inconvenience, but the municipality believes the improvements will provide lasting benefits to the area.
