The ranking was made by the car rental company Avis, which classified 40 islands based on their driving qualities. Factors such as terrain, altitude, tourist attractions and panoramic views were taken into consideration.

The islands of the Atlantic Ocean dominate the ranking, with Tenerife occupying the first position with a score of 83.5 out of 100, followed by Gran Canaria, also in Spain, and the island of Madeira.

Madeira had a score of 78.7 out of 100 points. More specifically, the island received 9 out of 10 points in the terrain parameter, as it has a route that can be driven for 6 hours. Among tourist attractions to appreciate the landscape, Madeira has the Cabo Girão Skywalk, located 580 meters above sea level, and is one of the highest cliffs in Europe. The ancient Laurissilva forest covers a third of the island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The natural pools of Porto Moniz are also considered unmissable, being an almost obligatory stop for anyone visiting the island, according to Avis.

The popularity of Madeira is also evident in the number of online searches, which reach 1.5 million.

In the case of the winning route, a car trip can take drivers to the highest point in Spain, Teide, as well as the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the Anaga forest and La Laguna, which many tourists may miss, preferring to stay closer to the coast.

In second place in the ranking is Gran Canaria, which is described as a mini-continent, due to its volcanic peaks, dunes and deep ravines alongside the Atlantic coast.
